Welcome message from Knesset Speaker, MK Rubi Rivlin

Dear friends,

Welcome to the Constitution for Israel website.

Since the election of the Constituent Assembly, which then became the First Knesset, the Knesset has continuously reserved its constitutive powers to adopt a constitution for Israel. The Knesset has occasionally used these powers to adopt several Basic Laws, but no formal constitution was adopted.

A constitution that will establish the basic principles and laws of the state, its credo, values, and basic structure of government, is still vital. A constitution by broad consensus has the potential to bridge gaps, be a source of political and democratic solidarity and unity, and constitute a strong foundation for the continued existence of the state. For these reasons, I have pledged my full support of the Constitution by Broad Consensus Project, initiated by the Chair of the Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee, MK Michael Eitan.

Israel is the democratic state of the Jewish people. Therefore, informing the worldwide Jewish community of the constitutional process, and asking for their comments and input, is indispensable for writing a constitution for Israel. Therefore, I have also expressed my strong support of the attempt to engage and involve Jewish people around the world in the constitutional process.

This website is the first important step in this attempt, and I am delighted to extend an invitation to all visitors: be a part of writing Israel’s Constitution.

Sincerely yours,

Reuven (Rubi) Rivlin
Speaker of the Knesset
